'''Multiplayer''' is a feature in the {{SER}} that allows multiple [[player]]s to interact with each other in various forms, the most common being visiting other players' [[town]]s.

It has always been possible across the {{SER|nolink}} to visit other towns, although only since {{WW|short}} is it possible to play with another player at the same time, as well as visit towns through the Internet. At most three players can be invited by a host, although this is expanded in {{NH|short}} with seven invited players.

==Friend Codes and Friends==

A Friend Code is a 12-digit code that identifies any player.

In {{WW|short|nolink}} and {{CF|short|nolink}}, a Friend Code was obtainable for the first time by talking to [[Copper]] and saying "Friend Code!" This would connect to the [[Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection]] to assign the player a code. From {{NL|short|nolink}} onwards, Friend Codes and Friends are assigned on a system level.

Two players must add each other's Friend Code so that they can be friends. Prior to the introduction of Dodo Codes, two players must add each other as friends before they may visit each other. In {{NL|short|nolink}}, if two guests are on the same town but are not each other's friends, they may add each other in the Guest List at the bottom screen.

===Best friends===

Best friends can send messages to each other even when they're not in the same town. They only need to be online and have the best-friend message-exchange function turned on, which can be toggled anytime. When a player's best friend is online, they will receive a message from that person automatically saying "I am online!" A player can send a message to either only one Best Friend, or to all Best Friends online at the time.

In {{NL|short|nolink}}, two friends may become best friends if they both have the heart selected in each other's Guest List when together in a town, whether one of them is hosting or they're both in another friend's.

In {{NH|short|nolink}}, a player may send a best friend request to any friend in the Best Friends app regardless of where they are. The recipient may either accept or reject this request.

==Visiting towns online==

A player can host for their friends by opening their town's gates and letting visitors in. The host must talk to [[Copper]] in {{WW|short|nolink}} and {{CF|short|nolink}}, [[Porter]] in {{NL|short|nolink}}, or [[Orville]] in {{NH|short|nolink}}. Likewise, a player can visit a friend by talking to these special characters and asking if there are any towns whose gates are opened.

The player cannot enter a friend's town if someone else is trying to enter or leave at the moment.

The host can choose to end the session anytime via the <kbd>Start</kbd> or <kbd>-</kbd> menu. In addition, the host can close the town's gates anytime, ensuring that no more players can enter. If no other players are present when the gates are closed, the multiplayer session would also end.

In {{NH|short|nolink}}, it is possible to invite only best friends in the player's town.

===Dodo Codes===

In {{NH|short|nolink}}, it is no longer required for players to be friends to visit each other online. By requesting for a Dodo Code, Orville will give the player a 5-character code that will expire once the multiplayer session ends. The player can then request that this code be only accessible by friends only, by best friends only, or by anyone. The player will then have to provide that code to their guests. This can be used for trading on websites like Nookazon.

When looking for towns to visit, Orville will not present towns that are open via Dodo Code. The guest must enter it manually, and, if valid, will be presented with the town name before confirming.

===Limitations===

Hosts and visitors can do almost anything in multiplayer mode, although with some exceptions. The host cannot donate to [[Blathers]] or access some [[town hall]] services when the multiplayer session is active. Visitors cannot use the [[lost and found]] nor the [[recycle box]] services.

Interaction with villagers is a bit limited in a multiplayer session. Villagers cannot "ping" players, nor react to player [[reaction]]s. A visitor can invite a villager who is [[moving|about to move out]] to move to their town, if the visitor has room in their town, among other requirements.

In {{NH|short|nolink}}, a visitor may only use a [[shovel]] or [[axe]] if they are best friends with the host. Best friends can also bypass the censorship filter when chatting with each other.

==Local multiplayer==

In {{WW|short|nolink}}, {{NL|short|nolink}}, and {{NH|short|nolink}}, players can interact with each other without connecting to the internet. The host and guests must request for local wireless when opening their town and visiting a town respectively. Prior to {{NH|short|nolink}}, adding each other as friends beforehand is not necessary.

In {{NH|short|nolink}}, as it is for visiting online, the players must first add each other as friends in order to visit. In addition, the host may request for a 4-digit Dodo Code, which the guests must enter in order to access the town, instead of freely opening the gates so that anyone may visit.

{{PG|nolink}} does not have any simultaneous multiplayer functionality. However, it is possible to visit the town inserted in Memory Card Slot B by talking to [[Porter]] at the [[Train Station]].

In {{PG}}, up to four players can live in a town, with each having their own house.

====Visiting other towns====
The player can talk to [[Porter]] at the [[train station]] to visit another town. If there is town data in the Memory Card in Slot B, the player can visit that town. Visiting a town this way results in a scene on the train where [[Rover]] (or rarely, [[Blanca]]) speaks to the player. If there is no town data in Slot B, the player can save travel data to the Memory Card in Slot B. This travel data contains player data, including their name, gender, face type, clothing, and inventory. Loading another town in Slot A while this travel data is in Slot B causes the traveling player to arrive in town.

When visiting another town, the player can speak to Porter to either return to their town or save their travel data back to the Memory Card in Slot B. If returning via the former method, another scene on the train occurs before the player returns to their town; if returning via the latter method, loading the player's town data while their travel data is in Slot B results in them arriving in town at the train station.

If the player [[reset]]s the game in another town, resets the game after returning to their town but before saving the game, or loads their original save without the necessary travel data, they will lose all items in their [[Pockets|inventory]], including [[Bell]]s and [[letter]]s, and their face will be set to one resembling a [[gyroid]]. [[Mr. Resetti]] will not appear if the game is reset this way. Saving or resetting again and reloading the game returns the player's face to its normal appearance.

Having a visitor from another town is required for [[Blanca]] to visit town; if she is encountered by a visiting player on the train to another town, she will appear in the town being visited the next day. Additionally, having a visitor enter [[Nookway]] is required for the shop to upgrade to [[Nookington's]].

In {{WW}}, like in {{PG|nolink}}, up to four players can live in a single town. However, players now live in the same house, likely due to the smaller town size. In {{CF}}, since the towns are larger than in {{WW|short|nolink}}, players live in separate houses again.

====Friends====
In {{WW|short|nolink}} and {{CF|short|nolink}}, if the player talks to [[Copper]] at the [[checkpoint]], they can receive a 12-digit Friend Code. If this code is entered into another player's game, they can become friends. Friends can visit each other's towns and send each other letters over the Internet.

====Tag Mode====
Tag Mode (known as Contact Mode in Europe), is a mode exclusive to {{WW|short|nolink}} that allows players to interact wirelessly. While the game is in Tag Mode, coming within range of another person who also has their game in Tag Mode will allow both to swap Notes in Bottles which have been let out to sea, as well as trade [[constellation]]s and [[villager]]s.

====Visiting other towns====

In {{WW|short|nolink}} and {{CF|short|nolink}}, the player can talk to Copper at the checkpoint to either visit someone else's town or to open the checkpoint to allow other players into their town by telling him "I wanna go out!" or "Invite guests" respectively. Up to four players can be in a town at one time. Players can chat via an in-game keyboard, or, in {{CF|short|nolink}} only, via the Wii Speak accessory.

=====Locally=====
Local Wireless multiplayer is only available in {{WW|short|nolink}}. After telling Copper "I wanna go out!", the player will be given the option between local and online play. If local is selected the game will search for nearby Nintendo DS systems with their checkpoint open, and, if one is found, the player will visit that town. Up to four players can play in a single town via local wireless, and all players must have a copy of the game.

If online play is selected when talking to Copper, the player was able to visit the town of someone on their Friends List via the [[Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection]]. Since the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection was discontinued on May 20th, 2014, online play is no longer possible in {{WW|short|nolink}} and {{CF|short|nolink}}.

====Multiple residents====
Like in previous games, up to four players can live in one town. They each have their own house, and only the first player to move in is the mayor. Therefore, other players cannot do mayoral duties such as building [[Public Works Project]]s or enacting ordinances. All players can give Bells towards the projects, however.

====Friends====
Friends from the player's Nintendo 3DS Friends List who also have played {{NL|short|nolink}} will appear in the player's in-game Friends List. Like in previous games, friends can visit each other's towns over the Internet and send each other letters.

====Visiting other towns====
The player can visit the [[train station]] and talk to [[Porter]] to visit other people's towns or open their gate for people to visit.

Up to four players can play in a single town via local wireless. All players must have a copy of the game.

Players could visit friends' towns over the Internet. If Parental Controls were enabled on the Nintendo 3DS, the player would not be able to visit other players' towns online or have online visitors.

Once the Dream Suite is built, the player can share a dream of their town for others to visit over the Internet. The dream acts as a saved state of the player's town at the time of sharing, and it must be updated manually.

The Happy Home Showcase allows players to meet and visit the houses of players that they have met over StreetPass.

Unlike previous games, up to eight players, including the host, can play on a single island, except for local co-op, where only up to four residents, including one leader, can play.

In {{NH}}, this is the first game where up to eight players can live on one island, and they each have their own house. The first player to arrive on the island becomes the [[Resident Representative]].

Local co-op multiplayer is a feature exclusive to {{NH|short|nolink}}, such that multiple players of the same island can play on the same console. A player can use the Call Resident app on their [[NookPhone]] to call up to three other residents on the island. This will start local co-op mode, where the initial player is assigned the role of "leader" while the others are known as "followers". The Call Resident app will only be unlocked once there is more than one player on the island, and this will be unlocked to all residents.

The leader is able to do several things similar to single player mode. They can access facilities such as the [[Nook Stop]] and their NookPhone, talk to other characters, and several others. They can also use [[Island Designer]]. Accessing the Call Resident app will allow the leader to view the followers' passports, end the session, change the leader, or close the game entirely. The leader is unable to access [[Orville]]'s services.

Followers' actions are very limited. They cannot talk to villagers, use chat, enter or exit buildings, and access their inventory or NookPhone. They are able to access tools by pressing {{Input|x}} which will allow them to cycle through their tools but not other handheld items such as the {{I|Duster|NH}} and {{I|Pocketbook|NH}}. Holding a non-tool handheld item as a leader and becoming a follower will cause the player to unequip it. They can use [[wand]]s, but pressing {{Input|a}} will toggle between their default outfit and a random outfit they have. Followers can use [[reactions]] but only the eight that they registered as favorites. Any items picked up or caught by a follower will be sent to the [[recycle box]] to be picked up later by anyone. A follower who digs something up or catches a critter will "exclaim" the name of that item in a speech bubble.

The leader and followers can move at the same time, but followers are unable to move whenever the leader has certain apps on their NookPhone open, or when they are accessing the chat keyboard or other facilities. Followers who move too far away from the leader will be teleported back near to them. Because of that, followers who shake down {{I|wasp nest|NH}}s will react in shock, but the [[wasp]]s will chase the leader.

The leader can be switched by shaking the Joy-Con or Pro Controller, and a follower must press {{Input|a}} while standing up to become a leader.

When the leader ends the session, they will be able to play on their own profile, even if they aren't the same player who started local co-op.

====Friends====
Friends from the player's Nintendo Switch Friends List who also have played {{NH|short|nolink}} will appear in the player's in-game Friends List. Like in previous games, friends can visit each other's islands over the Internet and send each other letters. A player must at least visit their friend's island or have their friend come to that player's island in order to send letters, they can also mark each other as best friends if conditions have been met and can send messages via the Best Friends app on [[NookPhone]]. This also marks the first game where a player's friend cannot modify the island with a Shovel or Axe unless they are registered as Best Friend.

====Visiting other islands====

The player can go to the [[Airport]] and talk to [[Orville]] to visit other player's towns, open their gate for other players to visit, or receive a Dodo Code.

All players must own a copy of the game. Additionally, the host does not need to mark them as Best Friend in order to modify the island.

=====Online=====
Players can visit friends' islands over the Internet, or they can enter a one-time use Dodo Code to visit the island of someone not on their Friends List, including dreams. All methods require a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership.
