Camping Season is an event in the first-generation Animal Crossing games where a villager sets up camp in town. In every first-generation game, villagers living in town set up igloos in town each day during the winter. In Animal Crossing and Doubutsu no Mori e+ only, non-resident villagers also set up tents on weekends during the summer. Inside the tents and igloos, the player can play minigames with the camper to receive items or Bells.

Winter campers[edit]

Inside an igloo in Animal Crossing

In every first-generation Animal Crossing game, each day from January 2 to February 24, a villager living in town sets up an igloo in place of a signpost from 10 AM to 10 PM. If the player speaks to the villager, they may offer to play one of two minigames. One involves the player buying a item from the villager, and the other involves the villager buying an item from the player. The former requires the player to have at least 3,000 Bells in their wallet, and the latter requires them to have a furniture, wallpaper, or carpet item in their inventory.

When giving or selling a furniture item to the player, it has a chance of being one of eight exclusive, winter camping-themed furniture items. Due to an oversight, it can also be the unused "DUMMY" item.

The exact format of the minigames differs between villager personalities:

Personality Buy minigame Sell minigame
Emotion Sleepy NH Icon.png Lazy The villager offers a wallpaper item and asks the player to choose between three words to guess what they are thinking: "Peach," "Pear," or "Apple." If the player guesses correctly, the villager gives them the item for free. If the player guesses incorrectly, they are forced to buy the item for a random price. The villager offers to buy an item from the player's inventory for a random price. The player can either choose to sell for that price or hear the next price. Choosing to hear the next price results in the villager either offering a higher price, buying the item for a lower price than the initial offer, or ending the minigame without buying anything.
Emotion Pride NH Icon.png Jock The villager has the player guess which move the villager used to defeat them in wrestling. There are three rounds: the first has the options "Head" and "Wrist"; the second, "Head" and "Side"; and the third, "Head," "Side," and "Wrist." If the player guesses the correct move in all three rounds, the villager gives them a furniture item for free. If the player does not guess the correct move in all three rounds, they are forced to buy a furniture item for a random price. The villager offers to buy an item from the player's inventory. To determine the price, the player must pick between the right, middle, and left card. After the player picks the card, the villager sees the price and reacts to it. Based on their reaction, the player can choose to sell the item for the chosen price or pick another card. If the player chooses to pick another card, they are forced to sell the item for the price on that card.
Emotion Aggravation NH Icon.png Cranky The villager has the player pick between the right, left, and middle card. One card is lucky, one is so-so, and one is unlucky. If the player picks the lucky card, the villager gives them a furniture, wallpaper, or carpet item for free. If the player picks the so-so card, they are forced to buy the item for a random price. If the player picks the unlucky card, they are forced to buy the item for a higher price, up to 3,000 Bells. The villager offers to buy an item from the player's inventory. They think of a number from one to nine, and the player must guess if the number is less than or greater than five. If the player guesses correctly three times, the villager buys the item for more than 3,000 Bells. If the player guesses correctly once or twice, the villager buys the item for between 500 and 3,000 Bells. If the player guesses incorrectly on the first guess, the villager buys the item for less than 500 Bells.
Emotion Happiness NH Icon.png Normal The villager has five furniture items and lists them off one at a time at a random price. After each item is listed, the player can either buy it or see what the next item is. If the player does not purchase any of the first four items, they are forced to buy the fifth item. The villager offers to buy an item from the player's inventory. The player can choose between four cards to reveal the price.
Emotion Encouraging NH Icon.png Peppy The villager offers a furniture item for the amount of Bells in the player's wallet and has the player pick between four symbols: Circle, X, Triangle, and Square. If the player chooses a different symbol than the villager, the price of the item is lowered. Once the player picks the same symbol as the villager, they are forced to buy the item at the current price. The villager offers to buy an item from the player's inventory for a set price. The player can choose between the villager's left or right hand. If they guess correctly, the villager increases the price. If they guess incorrectly, the villager buys the item at the current price. If the player guesses correctly three times, they can choose whether or not to sell the item.
Emotion Disagreement NH Icon.png Snooty The villager offers a furniture item and a wallpaper for the player to choose between blindly by picking either the left or right bag. If the player picks the furniture bag, they receive the item for free. If they pick the wallpaper bag, they are forced to purchase it for 3,000 Bells. The villager offers to buy an item from the player's inventory. The player can choose between three cards, marked with a circle, a triangle, and an X. If the player guesses the same symbol as the villager twice, they buy the item for more than 3,000 Bells. If the player guesses the same symbol once, the villager buys the item for between 500 and 3,000 Bells. If the player does not guess the same symbol, the villager buys the item for less than 500 Bells.

Summer campers[edit]

Inside a tent in Animal Crossing

In Animal Crossing and Doubutsu no Mori e+ only, each weekend from June 1[nb 1] to August 31, a villager not living in town sets up a tent in place of a signpost from 9 AM on Saturday to 3 PM on Sunday.

When giving or selling a furniture item to the player, it has a chance of being one of ten exclusive, summer camping-themed furniture items.

The exact format of the minigames differs between villager personalities.

Trivia[edit]

  • The summer camping event was one of the last things added to Animal Crossing before its release in September 2002. During E3 in May 2002, Nintendo of America's localization team met with the Japanese developers and created the summer camping event as a way for players to see new villagers.[1]

Notes[edit]

  1. 1.0 1.1 Summer campers can also appear at the end of May if the week overlaps with the first week of June; in this case, they will only appear beginning on Sunday at midnight.
